Neurotrauma

Overview

The Neurotrauma Section of the UMMC Department of Neurosurgery consists of nationally and internationally recognized and respected experts in all areas of neurological trauma. Patients suffering from traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and/or peripheral nerve trauma are cared for by these expert physicians who make use of evidence based techniques to provide the most up to date and comprehensive medical and surgical management available in the world today.

Each provider of care to the neurologically injured patient attends a weekly meeting. During this meeting, each patient's needs are discussed and solutions offered to ensure the highest quality of care for the patient while in the hospital, when discharged to home or to another facility to continue his or her recovery.

The neurosurgical intensive care unit (NSICU) is staffed by full time neurointensivists. These physicians work closely with the neurotrauma surgeons to provide the very best of care for patients during their stay in the NSICU. Clinically proven guidelines have been developed, implemented and are carefully followed within the NSICU.
